We all know at least one person who is hard of hearing,
faces a speech or language challenge, or who is Deaf. Stop and think
a minute…whether
it’s you, your parents, your children, your co-worker or your
friend, we all know someone.
In fact, one out of every five members of our Puget
Sound community faces a speech challenge, hearing loss, or is
Deaf. And since 1937, the Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center (HSDC)
has been providing them with state-of-the-art services.
Now, in
our
new home
with
the latest equipment, skilled clinicians, educators,
therapists,
and
specialists,
that
tradition continues.
What Does Communication Mean to Us?
Communication means working with each individual client and their family
to determine and support whatever will be the most effective method
of communicating for that specific person. It may be sign language,
hearing
aids, speech
therapy,
language
training, motor therapy, assistive devices or technology. The HSDC
staff is experienced in all of these methods and uses them in combination
with a true desire to serve their client well. This combination of
expertise and caring is what has made HSDC successful with thousands
of people each year.
In addition, the staff knows how to support the use of these methods
in practical application. Whether training the entire family to communicate
with a child, or advising the workplace on how better to accommodate
employees, HSDC is here to support the achievement of personal,
educational and vocational goals.
And, perhaps most importantly, it is here for members of our community
regardless of the person’s
ability to pay. Through donations, proceeds from services and sales
and funding
from
United Ways of King and Snohomish Counties, HSDC underwrites these
services.
Commitment to the Community
Good communication also means working with the community. HSDC
serves as a convening force with other nonprofit agencies to strengthen
coalitions and collaborations to better serve our community. The
Artz Communication Center, home of the Hearing, Speech & Deafness
Center, is a focal point for community advocacy and activities.
