This half-day workshop is presented by the Hearing,
Speech & Deafness Center’s Seattle Diversity Works! program.
This exciting workshop is geared to human resources professionals,
diversity affairs managers, administrators, managers,
supervisors, Deaf employees, and their hearing co-workers. The experience
is most powerful and effective when Deaf and hearing colleagues attend
together.
The workshop cincludes:
- Sensitivity Training Exercises Communication Barrier Exercise -
Experience what it is like not to be able to hear. Now try communicating
with your hearing colleagues. Discover and take advantage of the
many non-verbal ways there are to communicate.
- Lip-reading Exercises - Experience firsthand how difficult lip-reading really
is and how much guesswork is always involved. Only 30% of English is distinguishable
on the lips.
- Basic Workplace Signs and Fingerspelling - Learn the 26 letters of the manual
alphabet, a dozen beginning signs, and get started forming simple ASL sentences.
Talking with your hands is fun!

links between Deaf and hearing people and how to use them appropriately and
effectively in your workplace.
- Potential Sources of Cultural Conflict in a Deaf/Hearing Workplace - In this
group exercise, work through real-life, sticky situations (i.e., The interpreter
does not show up for the scheduled staff meeting; what do you do?) to arrive
at acceptable solutions that maintain employee goodwill.
- Deaf Culture Quiz -- By taking this quiz at the start of the day, see for yourself
how much you've learned by the end of the training.
