elderwise
Elderwise is a cultural and artistic enrichment program designed to promote healthy aging for seniors through a multi-faceted venue based on respect for the wisdom of elders.

Elderwise aims to improve the quality of life of area seniors; helping to enhance and prolong the independence of this under-served population by providing healthy food, exercise, and intellectual and creative stimulation, in a respectful, non-institutional environment.

The curriculum is based on holistic activities for body/mind/spirit, and encourages community. Visiting specialists have contributed professional storytelling, raku kiln-firing of participants' ceramic pieces, and eurhythmy, to name a few highlights. Paintings produced in the program have been exhibited at a local bookstore and were very well received, much to the delight of all.

The large segment of the older adult population who face physical challenges make large, loosely supervised programs dangerous or impractical, but many elders who have sharp minds and do not need nursing care have little offered to them in the way of social and intellectual stimulation. The program aims to meet the needs of this group. While the safety of participants is provided for, the Elderwise program does not focus on disability, but attempts to address the needs of the whole person.

Elderwise is supported by gifts, grants, and participant fees. Some fee reductions are available for low income participants. Several grants from area and national agencies help to underwrite certain costs. Elderwise is a registered non-profit organization and a member of the Washington Adult Day Service Association.
