Many of the challenges facing women in King County,
such as lack of a support system, domestic violence and drug abuse,
are rooted in adolescence. Powerful Voices was formed to address these
issues at their root by developing the individual potential in adolescent
girls, not by preaching to them, but by offering hands-on experiences
in which they develop their leadership and critical thinking skills.
Powerful Voices instills leadership skills, fosters the development
of critical thinking, and promotes the individual potential in adolescent
girls. They offer innovative, evidence-based programming in Seattle
public middle schools, as well as in and out of juvenile detention.
They have built a reputation, both regionally and nationally, as
experts in the field and are called upon regularly to consult on
issues effecting girls. With a nation hungry for solutions to unhealthy
girl culture all too prevalent in schools and on the streets, the
organization is poised to distribute a model for working with girls
that can transform school communities, reduce female juvenile recidivism
and influence best practices across the country.
