The Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center now
offers a summer literacy program for children! Our program is specially
targeted
toward children who have speech and language delays, since studies
show these children have a significantly greater risk (75%)
of encountering
difficulties when learning to read. Our Early Literacy Program for
children ages four to five will help your
child
enter kindergarten
ready to learn basic
reading-related skills.
Specific skills addressed in this group include:
- Book knowledge and print awareness
- Phonological awareness
- Letter knowledge
- Narrative comprehension
All programs are conducted by certified
speech-language pathologists with specialized training and experience
in literacy intervention. Our program is based on the following principles:
- Research shows that explicit, intensive and supportive
intervention is most effective for lasting, functional gains
in literacy and related skills.
- Literacy is a language-based skill. Speech-language pathologists
have the expertise necessary to diagnose and treat literacy
delays and disorders.
G
- iven the proper instruction, and early literacy intervention,
children who have not benefited from traditional teaching
methods can become competent readers.
We use fun, motivating activities and reward children for their
hard work and their success. We want all children to experience
the joy of reading!
The program fee includes a comprehensive language and literacy
evaluation, twelve ninety-minute group sessions (two per week for six weeks),
and post-program testing, report, & recommendations. Some insurances
may provide coverage for this program.
