For the 20% of Puget Sound residents who face
a hearing or communication challenge, being in the workplace can be
an isolating and challenging
experience. It may be nearly impossible to speak with co-workers,
communicate over the telephone or simply fit in with the day-to-day
activities of the office.
The Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center’s education program
has developed a curriculum designed to address these challenges,
eliminating barriers and creating an inclusive work environment.
If your business is located in the Seattle metropolitan area, these
diversity education trainings can be conducted at your location and
customized
to address
specific
workplace
issues.
Many organizations
find these
on-site classes both support their diversity goals and serve as an
excellent team building activity.
Working Together: Deaf & Hearing
Two hour, four hour, or full day workshops covering Deaf culture,
using interpreters, “hands-on” communication strategies,
making your workplace “Deaf friendly”, ethical issues
and technology. Both introductory and advanced workshops are available;
advanced workshops feature the popular employer panel.
Working Together: Hard of Hearing & Hearing
This four-hour workshop covers what it means to be hard of hearing,
both from a medical and social perspective, with situations and strategies
for effective communication. This topic is particularly relevant
in today’s workplace, as the baby boomer population becomes
increasingly more affected by hearing loss.
Workplace Sign Language Classes
These beginning and intermediate workplace sign language classes
are designed to break down communication barriers between Deaf and
hearing employees. These ten-week courses are tailored to your industry,
specific workplace needs, and vocabulary requirements.
Accent Modification Class
Designed for hearing, non-native speakers of English, this thirteen-week
course is a great benefit for employees who are concerned that their
accent might distract from their communication or serve as a barrier
to promotion. Participants learn pronunciation patterns based on
their individual accent and will experience at least a 50% improvement
in their English pronunciation.
