The Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center is proud
to offer the Lee Silverman ® Voice Treatment (LSVT) for Parkinson's
disease. Unlike traditional speech therapy methods and other programs,
LSVT has documented short- and long-term effectiveness in helping the
89% of Parkinson’s patients who have voice and speech problems.
Lee Silverman ® Voice Treatment is an intensive program aimed at treating
the tremor and reduced loudness associated with the speech problems. Treatment
consists of one-hour sessions, which are held four days per week for four
consecutive weeks.
LSVT emphasizes a single, simple parameter: think loud. It involves a recalibration
of the patient’s sense of vocal effort and loudness increasing the
patient’s awareness of the effort involved in talking in a loud voice.
Patients initiate a “loud” voice by making prolonged vowel
sounds and progress to more complex speech drills.
Since treatment focuses on immediate carryover into daily communication,
90% of patients improve from pre- to post-treatment and 80% maintain this
improvement for twelve to twenty-four months after treatment.
If you have questions about whether somone you know could benefit from
LSVT, feel free to contact us at the Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center
for more information or to schedule an appointment.
