Volunteering at the Hearing, Speech, & Deafness Center

The Center provides varied volunteer opportunities which include help for clients and staff, board and committee membership, administrative tasks and special events.  If you are interested in board or committee membership, please contact Susie Burdick, CEO, at sburdick@hsdc.org.

Our mission is to strengthen community by promoting effective communication.
Our vision is for all individuals to reach their full communication potential.

We are pleased that you may volunteer to help us fulfill this mission.  Whether as an individual or a group, your help is gratefully utilized.

  Volunteer Guidelines

Location  We utilize volunteers primarily at our main campus, 1625 19th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122 (corner of 19th and Madison).  We provide free parking and lots of camaraderie, hot coffee and tea.  Please see the list below for opportunities in our Bellingham and/or Tacoma satellite offices.

Schedule  Most volunteer activities occur during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM.  Volunteers with ASL skills may be interested in volunteering for communication playgroups on Monday evening, from 6:30 – 8:30.

Client Contact  Because clinical services are provided, your contact with clients will be limited.

Sign Language Skills  You need not be fluent in sign language (with the exception of Early Childhood Education volunteers).  Volunteering here provides limited opportunities to learn or practice sign language.  If you are interested in learning sign language, you may participate in internal classes for staff and volunteers..

Schedule Commitment  We expect a reasonable commitment of time from our volunteers, but can be flexible about how that commitment if fulfilled.

What Should I Wear? Dress style varies, depending on program or event needs. Just ask!

Security/Safety Issues  All volunteers must complete a Volunteer Action Form, which includes a client confidentiality agreement and allows the Center to run a basic WA State Patrol background check.

  Volunteer Opportunities At HSDC

Early Childhood Education (ECE) The ECE Department encompasses HSDC’s Parent-Infant Program (PIP) and the Rosen Family Preschool, serving children (0-5) with hearing loss.  PIP and the preschool utilize volunteers with American Sign Language (ASL) skills of 3 or better to work with kids during playgroups (PIP) and classroom sessions (preschool).  PIP communication playgroups are held Monday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30, while preschool classes are held Monday- Thursday mornings from 9:30 - noon. Volunteers work one-on-one with deaf and hard of hearing children and their siblings to learn ASL, communication and real-world skills through play.

Speech Language Pathology The Speech, Language & Literacy Department offers volunteers the opportunity to combine general administration activities with observation of speech therapy sessions (often in fulfillment of school requirements).  Volunteers generally pick one day a week to come in for 2-3 hours.  Volunteer time is split between observation and miscellaneous volunteer tasks / projects.

Administrative (filing, data entry, other) for Audiology, Speech, Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services and/or Administration/Development.  Volunteers can choose to volunteer in a particular department in which they are interested and set up flexible schedules- we can use your help whenever you’re available and we’re here, which is generally Monday – Friday from 8:30 to 5:00.

Special Projects HSDC sometimes has special projects or events for which we need extra help (could be anything from helping to prepare a mailing, to organizing toys, to serving food at an event).

Bellingham & Tacoma Our satellite offices in Bellingham and Tacoma focus on Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services, and utilize volunteers for a variety of office activities, including filing, data entry, admin projects and scheduling.  Bellingham also uses volunteers to help cover the front desk and for specific projects depending on current needs.

  Internship Opportunities At HSDC

Occasionally HSDC offers internships (generally unpaid, but it depends on the situation).  These internships are offered through specific departments: Audiology, Speech, and/or Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services, and are usually intended for students preparing to move into one of the associated fields.  For more information regarding such opportunities, please contact the department in which you are interested:
