Volunteer at HSDC
Volunteers are an integral part of what we do at Hearing, Speech and Deaf Center. The time and energy our community members contribute allow us to meet the needs of each individual who walks through our doors. Whether it’s directly working with clients or helping out behind the scenes, HSDC pairs diverse volunteers with trained staff to provide meaningful programs serving those with hearing loss and speech-language challenges, and promoting communication equality. We offer volunteer placements throughout virtually all facets of our organization and across all three of our office locations. Our volunteer opportunities evolve regularly as school quarters turn over, department needs change, and new programs emerge, so check back often to find an opportunity that is a good fit for you!
All volunteers must complete an online volunteer application (simply click the “Become a Volunteer” button on the right), which includes a client confidentiality agreement and consent to a basic Washington State Patrol background check. Volunteers also undergo a more extensive background check upon placement into a particular HSDC program.
American Sign Language Skills
Fluency in ASL is not necessary for many volunteer opportunities. Those opportunities that do require conversational ASL abilities, if any, are noted in the volunteer opportunities list (just click the “Current Opportunities” button on the right). You will be asked to indicate your skill level in ASL on the online volunteer application.
Other than volunteer activities involving the Parent-Infant Program, most volunteering opportunities occur during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm. However, additional opportunities are also offered from time to time outside of regular business hours. To check out a listing of current volunteer opportunities, click the button to the right.
