The Washington State Governor’s Committee on Disability
Issues and Employment has honored the Hearing, Speech & Deafness
Center as Medium Nonprofit Employer of the Year. |
|

|
|
| |
The Governor’s Award Program was presented by the Governor’s
Committee on Disability Issues and Employment in partnership with
the Washington State Business Leadership Network (WSBLN) and was
hosted by the Microsoft Corporation. |

The Governor’s Awards Program recognizes employers for
their efforts to recruit, hire and promote the employment of individuals
with disabilities. This year the Hearing, Speech and Deafness Center
(HSDC) of Seattle was selected for exhibiting a true commitment
to their vision that all individuals will realize their full communication
potential. Forty percent of the employees at HSDC are deaf, deaf-blind,
hard of hearing, speech challenged or face a physical challenge.
It is throughout the agency that HSDC demonstrates the commitment
to promote good people, regardless of their disability. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
In order to respect, integrate and support their colleagues and
clients with hearing loss, HSDC is a fully “signing” agency.
All staff members are required to take weekly classes in American
Sign Language (ASL). There is an on-staff interpreter for meetings,
conversations and interactions as needed. In addition to the staff
interpreter, additional interpreters and assistive technology are
provided without hesitation, not because of legal requirements
to do so, but because the soul of the agency is about serving people
with disabilities. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center also supports its employees
by developing coalitions and networks of professionals in the disabilities
community, and placing employees with disabilities in positions
of leadership. Through these actions, HSDC is able to act as a
convening force (for equal access), giving “voice” to
the community. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
As one client of HSDC was recently quoted, “I am continually
moved each time I enter the reception area and observe how quiet
it can be and at the same time, be filled with groups of people
intently communicating with one another!” |
