News from HSDC CEO, Susie Burdick
Hello Friends!
I love to cook. With tools all laid out, pots and pans in place, the apron on, great locally grown ingredients, a football game on the TV, a glass of wine and an idea…that's when I'm having fun. I love to read recipes and watch bits of some of the cooking shows, more for the new technique or inspiration than the recipes themselves. And I love the look on people's faces when they are really enjoying their meal.
So, you can imagine my delight when I had to do some field work for HSDC in a chef's kitchen!
A few weeks ago, I took part in a Cooking Class Dinner Party at the Blue Ribbon Culinary Center. Our "culinary destination" was Classic French Bistro with a menu including the following:
- Frisee Salad with Lardons and Poached Egg
- Steak and Frites
- Filet of Sole Meuniere
- Croque Monsieur & Madam
- Coq Au Vin
- Steamed Mussels with Sausage Tomatoes & Paprika
- Coquille Saint Jacque
- Duchess Potatoes
- Ginger Burnt Cream
- Floating Islands
OMG never seemed a more appropriate explanation! There were about twenty-five of us working with two chefs and we cooked and laughed and learned our way to a fabulous meal. That's the cool thing about Blue Ribbon, their setup. With several different cooking stations in a space that feels old world and charming, you spend a half an hour with cocktails and hors de oeuvres from the chefs. Then for the next ninety minutes you work at different stations preparing that night's menu and learning from and practicing with professional chefs. For the last hour, you sit at tables with a Lake Union view and eat the delicious food you have prepared – with a few chef's enhancements. It was really fun and meeting the other folks there was a delight.
Why am I sharing all this?
This year we decided to build on our success with our fundraising luncheons and shake it up a bit. We wanted to do something fun and different for the friends and supporters of HSDC. So mark your calendars now for... drum roll please...
Sharpen Your Inner Chef!
An Evening of Food, Friends & Philanthropy
Thursday, March 3, 2011
6:30 - 9:30pm
Blue Ribbon Culinary Center
This is a cool one friends. It works as date night, a night out with friends, or simply a new adventure on our own. It would be great for upcoming holiday, birthday or anniversary gifts. Enjoy the good feeling of doing something fun to support children with disabilities.
The proceeds from this event will benefit all the educational and clinical programs for children and families we serve at HSDC. With our Parent-Infant Program (0-3), our Rosen Family Preschool and Ned Behnke Speech Language Preschool (3-5), our Language to Literacy Program (6-14), Audiology and Speech Therapy, we're providing years of continuous educational and communication support for children who are deaf, deaf-blind, hard of hearing, have speech or cognitive challenges, or learning disabilities.
Please join me and your friends from HSDC in the kitchen to Sharpen Your Inner Chef!
All my best to you and yours,

Susie Burdick, CEO
