"So many people are doing early learning but you are doing it right. You are spot on with the important work you're doing. You are doing all right things to help these children develop successfully."
Dr Patricia Kuhl, keynote speaker

University of Washington professor, Dr. Patricia Kuhl served as keynote speaker at HSDC's annual Wake Up! Breakfast held on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the Seattle Sheraton. One of the world's leading authorities on language acquisition and brain development, Dr. Kuhl is a professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Washington and Co-Director of the UW Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences. Her work has played a major role in demonstrating how early exposure to language alters brain mechanisms.

In addition, Dr. Kuhl is interested in partnering with HSDC on future research projects. According to her, sign language works similarly to spoken language in terms of brain development, but she is interested in doing more research on this, possibly involving the children in our programs.

"This is a match made in heaven, HSDC and the University of Washington's Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences. I'm really interested in talking more about partnering on longitudinal studies. It would be great to work together."
Dr. Patricia Kuhl, on partnering with HSDC

The annual Wake Up! Breakfast benefits HSDC’s early learning programs. Past keynote speakers have included Phil Smart Sr. in 2005, the “ultimate volunteer” and a successful automobile dealer. 2006 brought Karen Bryant,COO of former WNBA champions the Seattle Storm. In 2007, HSDC welcomed William H. Gates Sr., who after a distinguished career in law is now Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

HSDC is preparing children, ages birth to eighteen, for school success with three new programs: the Family Preschool for families with Deaf, Deaf-Blind and hard of hearing children; the Ned Behnke Speech Language Preschool, an oral classroom for children with speech-language delays and/or hearing loss; and a Literacy Lab providing clinical and educational literacy instruction for children who are Deaf, Deaf-Blind or hard of hearing, and those with speech-language delays or learning disabilities. These programs, along
with the Center’s nationally recognized Parent-Infant Program, provide a continuum of communication services that assist children with special needs in acquiring the skills necessary to be successful in school and in life.
