Accent Modification Program
The Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center (HSDC) offers both group and private courses in modification of accent. Both courses include an initial phonetic analysis of speech patterns followed by weekly training sessions. Participants learn pronunciation patterns based on their individual accent and native language. Upon completion of the thirteen-week course, participants experience at least a 50% improvement in their English pronunciation.
Speech-language pathologists certified by the American Speech, Language & Hearing Association (ASHA) with specific training in the area of accent modification implement the program.
If you would like additional information about this program and how it may meet your needs, or if you are interested in scheduling an appointment, please contact Speech, Language & Literacy.
What Is HSDC's Accent Modification Program?
The Accent Modification Program is especially designed for non-native speakers of English who would like to improve their pronunciation of English to be more similar to that of the standard American dialect. The program is designed to be effective in accent modification regardless of the type of accent or primary language spoken. The program is specifically tailored to your individual needs and lifestyle, focusing on personal vocabulary and speaking situations (e.g. business meetings, use of voice mail, social engagements).
Who Is An Appropriate Candidate For The Program?
Individuals with any kind of accent interested in accent modification to become more efficient and effective communicators are candidates for the program. Participants come from a variety of backgrounds and include attorneys, software consultants, educators, healthcare workers, salespersons, students, engineers, homemakers, and many others. If your job and/or lifestyle involve communicating, our program can help!
How Long Is The Program And What Is Involved?
The program is thirteen weeks long and meets on a weekly basis for one hour (small group options may also be available). An extensive evaluation includes linguistic analysis of your speech and is used to plan a program specifically designed to suit your particular needs. The speech-language pathologist implements a program that focuses on identifying and modifying the intonation patterns and pronunciation differences having the greatest effect on your accent. The program also teaches you how to recognize patterns in your own speech and adjust your pronunciation accordingly. Daily home practice exercises are provided and are a key component to successful completion of the program. All program and practice materials are included in the cost of the program. After completion of the program, another thorough speech analysis is performed to determine the degree of modification in your accent.
What Can I Gain From Participation In Such A Program?
Enhanced communication abilities can greatly affect job satisfaction, productivity and career growth. Additionally, communicating effectively with other individuals, whether at social gatherings, business meetings, or over the phone, will enable you to be a confident and successful communicator. The emphasis on personal and practical use of language in the settings most critical to your life allows you to focus your practice and see immediate improvement in your everyday life.
