Volunteer & Internship
Volunteering at the Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center
The Center provides varied volunteer opportunities which include help for clients and staff, board and committee membership, administrative tasks and special events. If you are interested in board or committee membership, please contact Susie Burdick, CEO (ceo@hsdc.org / contact).
Vision
All individuals will realize their full communication potential.
Mission
The Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center strengthens community by promoting effective communication.
We are pleased that you may volunteer to help us fulfill this mission. Whether as an individual or a group, your help is gratefully utilized.
Volunteer Guidelines
Location
We utilize volunteers primarily at our main campus, 1625 19th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122 (corner of 19th & Madison). We provide free parking and lots of camaraderie, hot coffee and tea. Please see the list below for opportunities in our Bellingham and/or Tacoma satellite offices.
Schedule
Most volunteer activities occur during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm. Volunteers with ASL skills may be interested in volunteering for communication playgroups on Monday evening, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm.
Client Contact
Because clinical services are provided, your contact with clients will be limited.
Sign Language Skills
You need not be fluent in sign language for most opportunities, but it is required for some. Volunteering at HSDC provides limited opportunities to learn or practice sign language. If you are interested in learning sign language, you may participate in internal classes for staff and volunteers.
Schedule Commitment
We expect a reasonable commitment of time from our volunteers, but can be flexible about how that commitment if fulfilled.
What Should I Wear?
Dress style varies, depending on program or event needs. Just ask!
Security/Safety Issues
All volunteers must complete a Volunteer Action Form, which includes a client confidentiality agreement and allows the Center to run a basic WA State Patrol background check.
